Description:

This is a rare opportunity for deep meditation practice, study, pilgrimage, zen art and training in the forms of Zen. Since the time of the Buddha, practitioners have gathered to explore and train the mind. There will be meditation instruction for beginners, private interviews (dokusan) with Sensei Beate Genko Stolte, dharma talks and seminars. Appropriate for beginners and longtime practitioners.

This winter practice period starts with our famous yearly “Zen-Brain Retreat”. Under the guidance of Roshi Joan, well-known scholars, scientists and practitioners, we will explore and study “Emotions, Equinimity and the Embodied Mind” from the point of neuroscience and Buddhist philosophy.

Then we will be joined by Zen Brain faculty member, philosopher and Buddhist scholar John Dunne for the retreat "Awakening to Buddha Nature", during which time he will explore with us this Buddha principle in his uniquely humorous and brilliant way.

We will then drop into silence during sesshin, where we calm and settle the mind/body and experience the deep stillness that lies within each one of us. The sesshin will be lead by Sensei Beate and Kaz Tanahashi Sensei. We will end our practice period with a workshop in Zen arts entitled “ Brush Samadhi”, which offers training in both classical and free-form calligraphy with world-renowned artist Sensei Kazuaki Tanahashi.

A daylong pilgrimage to the wondrous archeological site Chaco Canyon (January 24) will deepen our experience of nature, the unknown and the wonder of presence.
